Version 4: April 25, 2003: I'm clarifying things so it will probably be easier to understand for people new to the game. ie. Turkey frogs: head crabs. Welcome to Half Life Uplink, the demo for one of the best games EVER. This demo is not part of the original game so others will want to download it too. You can find it almost anywhere, just search it up on www.google.ca. Before beginning the demo, I highly recommend you work through the hazard course first to learn about items and movement. --------------------------------------------- Gordon Freeman: You. Innocent scientist who a HEV suit that can carry a heck of a lotta weapons. Goodies: Scientists: Try not to shoot them because they may fail your mission. Push E (use key) when you're up to them in order to talk to them. Usually they will say something and follow you. Push E again to make them stop. If you walk too fast and ahead of them, they will stop where they are and say something like "This is as far as I'll go." but you can still push E on him to make him come again. Security guards: Also known as Barney. These guys have pistols that have unlimited ammo so use them wisely. However, they are still a PERSON and will shoot at you if you hurt them. They work about the same as scientists do, with the E button. Baddies: Head crab: These little buggers are small, quick and jumpy. When you see em, take em out from a distance. Otherwise prepare for some dodging because they will leap at you from about 3 meters away. Once they hit you, you'll lose some health. So try and dodge these guys before they touch you by strafing (moving sideways). Zombies: These guys are very slow and deadly. After a headcrab bites on a scientists, they become this guy (even though you never watch this happen so don't worry). Hit them far or fast because the moment he's close enough to you, he'll swipe at you with those nasty claws. Slaves: These are the green guys that can fire lightning at you. They're called slaves because they're supposed to be controlled by some Xen people blah blah blah. Anyways, they can fire a quick bolt of lightning at you but they need to charge it up. When you see em charge (you'll know what I mean when you see it), get to cover fast. Dodging doesn't really work well. They can swipe at you too. Houndeyes: These are yellowish green dogs that have a lot of eyes and quite cute (pffff). They'll run at you, stop, and charge up. You'll know what I mean when you hear them. About 3 seconds later, they'll let loose a sonic blast that'll knock you off your feet (or just damage you :) ). Don't even waste ammo on them. Wait till they run up to you and smash their eyes open with the crowbar. Half-Life is so violent :). Gargantua: Lets see, big, blue, bad. If you see him in the demo. Just watch. In the full version you'll get to have lots of fun with these guys. Like calling in airstrikes to blow em up :). Human baddies: Marines: The government wants to kill everyone and everything in the facility. That includes you. If you see em and you're at low health, you're screwed. They will find you, flank you, hurl grenades at you, and even kick you if you're not good enough. Aim for their heads and use your surroundings well. Don't stay in one spot too long because they WILL grenade you. --------------------------------------------- Weapons: Crowbar: No alternate fire. This is the first weapon you find and is basically useless unless against headcrabs. Just hold it down when you see headcrabs and beat them after they miss leaping at you. If against a zombie, move around the guy real fast and smack him in the head. Glock pistol: Primary fire shoots straight and at a medium pace. Alternate fire shoots faster and more unaccurate. This pistol is good because it is accurate in Primary fire. So always aim for the heads. Only use alternative fire when the enemies are close to you. This is the same kind of pistol that barney has. It's found when you meet the second Barney. You can always kill him to get more ammo (you evil person). MP5 Sub-Machine Gun: Although the training course had the attached grenade launcher, the demo does not have it (full version does :D ). This is the commonly used weapon of this demo. Although not as accurate as the Glock, it is much faster and can kill marines more efficiently. You find it next to marines after you kill them. You may find it in other places too afterwards. Shotgun: Primary fire shoots one slug straight forward. Alternate fire shoots two slugs with a wider spread. It's good for quick kills with slaves and marines. I think you get when you climb down the steam ladder. Use your flashlight below and you'll know where ( by the dying scientist). Grenades: No alternate fire. It lobs a grenade forward and gives off a small explosion. Nothing big like the satchel charge but efficient and common. You can prime it (count a few more seconds after you let go) and throw but don't hold it too long. It may explode the second you huck it out. --------------------------------------------- Walkthrough: -When you begin, walk straight out the hall and be careful of the equipment blowing up. Go up the stairs and listen to the scientist and Barney. Follow Barney to the elevator, hop in and push the button. -Exit the elevator after loading and walk to the left. Go through the door and acquire the crowbar. If you want to see some cool effects, smash the pop machine open and watch it blow up. Smash your way through the wooden crates and prepare to meet some of the first head crabs. -Smack all the headcrabs and move forward until you see another Barney. Enter the room behind him to get the pistol and grab some health and ammo. In front of Barney is a section full of headcrabs. If you manage to shoot the gas tank on the wall ahead, it'll blow most of em up. Move in to finish em off. -You'll see a door with laser beams. Those are tripmines, walk through the beams and you'll blow up. Watch out for the crates near the trip mines because theres a zombie behind it. Move back and shoot the trip mines, causing them to explode. -Walk through the area and stop when you see the warehouse. I highly recommned you save here. You'll encounter several marines and you'll have to kill em all with a pistol. Don't worry, you can grab their MP5 when they're dead. -After killing em all, go to the other end of the warehouse near the gates and go up the ladder to the right. Use the Health station and the HEV station. Push the button nearby to activate the crane thing carrying a crate. Hop on and take the ride. -Once it stops, jump off to the surface closest to you. Watch out for a marine there. If he runs, I don't suggest you follow him. You can if you want but you'll see why. -There is a ladder leading to a high storage thing so find it and climb it. Walk into the box thing and open the door at the end. Watch out for the rocket turret. -Jump over to the other ledge and pick up some grenades. Take out the rocket turret and the other grunts. You can jump to another ledge to pick up some health but it's hard so save before you do so. -Make your way down and head to the turrets. Man the MACHINE GUN turret and fire a few shots. Kill all the marines that run around (for a better effect, blow up that gas tank behind em) and pick up their ammo. Find your way to another opening where there is a marine in a tower. Take him out and his buddies on the ground. -Grab some more health by the bunker and go to the flaming pit. Crawl under the small opening and go through a load sequence. -See the plunger? Sneak to it and don't make any sound. Wait till the two marines are right by the TNT before you blow it up. Then walk by the door and wait for the scientist to open it for you. -Head straight pass the room and into the elevator. Get some more health and go to the controls at the other side. Turn the valve so that the big uplink thing points to the opening. USNRC? I don't remember what the letters were but whatever. Once you're done, quickly run back to the elevator before the marines catch you. They'll be bursting in from the roof. -Use your grenades to blow them up. Becareful because they have grenades too. Once the lower part of the room is clear, go down the elevator and watch the doors you came in from originally. Someone is using a blowtorch (oh wow). Now you can either: a) Find the valve by that STEAM, spin it, and crawl down the ladder quickly or b) Wait till the door is open and have fun blowing up all the marines. There are some tripmines behind them so it's fun to blow that up too. Then make your way down the ladder from A -At the bottom of the ladder, look to the right and in the dark (use your flashlight). You'll spot a dying scientist. Theres a shotgun and plenty of ammo to pick up. Head down the corridor and blast the zombie on your right. Then crawl under the pipe on your left and hop over to the other side. Take out the zombie on your right again. And if you need health, there should be some at the end of the pipes. -You should see a marine choking on something during that last part. Watch him explode and shoot the thing that was choking him. It'll extend it's tongue down and suck you up if you touch it. Shoot the thing and get by. -Don't fall into the toxic waste and climb up the ladder to your right. Watch the cool grunt above you as he's being dragged by a zombie. Thats another note. Beware of the zombie and several headcrabs once you finish climbing the ladder. -Get your crowbar and prepare to whack anything in sight. Move left after you reached the end of the ladder and kill a few more headcrabs on your left. There is also a battery for your suit by those headcrabs. Continue down the crawlspace and climb up the ladder. -You'll find yourself by some pipes. Jump your way out of the fence and SAVE. Now you'll meet the slaves. Just sit around and wait until the marines and the slaves duke it out. After all is quiet, go in and finish the job. (If you want more action, go to the place where you first saw that burning pit. You know, the path by the machine gun nest) -Head toward the machine gun and kill another slave. Stick to the right and run your way back to the warehouse fence thing. Shoot another slave. Walk by the fence and watch some more marines duke it out against the slaves. You might want to take cover cuz they can still hit you. Once all is quiet, open the fence doors and finish them up (whichever side won). -Retrace your steps to the Barney you met by the Glock and get some grenades ready. See that broken door that is sparking? Well if you push the button by it, it'll open. But if I were you, I"d huck some grenades out and blow up a few slaves cuz there are quite a lot. Open the door afterwards and take a few more out. Go down the elevator. -Watch Barney shoot a few headcrabs and go up to him. Then open the big doors and get some health by the 2 machines. Continue down the corridor and meet some houndeyes. Kill em and face the room full of machinery. Now if I were you I'd run straight through and to the door at the end. Then watch headcrabs and zombies craw; towards you and kill em all! -To the left of the big doors is a vent. In full version Half-Life, you'll see a LOT of these. Anyhoo, go ahead and crawl through and towards a loading sequence. Get out and kill the barnacle above you to use the health center. -Go towards the dark doorway and watch the vents behind you fall down. Head to the end of the vent and climb your way up. Crawl into the vent and watch out for that headcrab. -Keep crawling and watch the ending sequence. No there is no way to live and keep fighting. YOU'RE DEAD!
